For a period of time Carl worked on Scorup Sommerville Cattle ranch. He was there after high school and except for a brief time at school until he was 32. He loved the ranch. He had a horse named Chief. The ranch was on the Lasal Mountains (the site of the 1985 reunion).
Carl was called to serve in the United States Army during the 2nd World War. He was sent to Texas. He had a difficult time marching with his flat feet. He was put in charge of the mules and eventually honorably discharged to return to the ranch to help in the production of beef for the troops.
